چکیده

Abstract The position of the Banwell Bone Cave mammal assemblage zone (MAZ) in mammalian biostratigraphy British Isles has been focus debate for decades. Dominated by fauna typical cold environments it was originally linked to marine oxygen isotope stage (MIS) 4 stadial (ca. 72–59 ka). Subsequently argued that MAZ more likely relates temperate interstadial MIS 5a 86–72 It is envisioned “cold fauna” such as bison and reindeer moved into Britain during 5b 90 ka) were subsequently isolated rising sea level 5a. Here we investigate environmental conditions using bone collagen ? 13 C 15 N tooth enamel 18 O analysis. We analyse from type-site, Cave. Our results show unusually high values, which ascribe arid within a environment. Palaeotemperature estimates derived indicate warm temperatures, similar present day. These confirm supports its correlation rather than 4.

The large-mammal fauna from the Kibish Formation.

The Kibish faunal remains are useful for reconstructing the habitat of the earliest documented Homo sapiens and for understanding the community within which early modern humans existed. A diverse assemblage of large mammals, including many species of bovids, suids, and equids, has been recovered from the Kibish Formation. There are no extinct large mammals represented in the fossil assemblage, ...

Bergmann’s rule and the mammal fauna of northern North America

The observation that ‘‘on the whole. . . larger species live farther north and the smaller ones farther south’’ was first published by Carl Bergmann in 1847. However, why animal body mass might show such spatial variation, and indeed whether it is a general feature of animal assemblages, is currently unclear. We discuss reasons for this uncertainty, and use our conclusions to direct an analysis...

Using Stable Isotopes

Introduction Direct measurement of de novo lipogenesis has not previously been possible in humans. We measured de novo hepatic lipogenesis in normal men by means of stable isotopes and by combining the acetylated-xenobiotic probe technique with mass isotopomer analysis of secreted very low density lipoproteinfatty acids (VLDL-FA). Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was administered with ['3Clacetate during...

Ecomorphological disparity in an adaptive radiation: opercular bone shape and stable isotopes in Antarctic icefishes

To assess how ecological and morphological disparity is interrelated in the adaptive radiation of Antarctic notothenioid fish we used patterns of opercle bone evolution as a model to quantify shape disparity, phylogenetic patterns of shape evolution, and ecological correlates in the form of stable isotope values. Using a sample of 25 species including representatives from four major notothenioi...

Stable Isotopes Issue

We tested the competing hypotheses that (1) nitrogen discrimination in mammals and birds increases with dietary nitrogen concentration or decreasing C:N ratios and, therefore, discrimination will increase with trophic level as carnivores ingest more protein than herbivores and omnivores or (2) nitrogen discrimination increases as dietary protein quality decreases and, therefore, discrimination ...
